Abstract

A seafaring career, unlike most vocational tracks an Indonesian adolescent might enter, requires eventual acceptance of extended physical separation from family, a condition that begins shaping household decision-making well before a student ever completes an apprenticeship placement or enters the workforce, yet no study has examined how parents and guardians themselves understand, support, or constrain a child's entry into maritime vocational education. This study investigates parental perspectives and household decision-making processes surrounding adolescent entry into maritime vocational education in Jakarta, examining how families with and without prior seafaring background understand the career path, transmit relevant knowledge, and negotiate enrollment and persistence decisions. A qualitative design was employed, combining semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with 20 parents or guardians of current maritime vocational students, stratified by prior family maritime background, supplemented by 6 school career-guidance staff and 4 community informants. Thematic analysis, cross-group comparison, and narrative synthesis identified four dominant findings: inherited versus improvised career knowledge transmission, financial necessity as a co-determinant alongside aspiration, incomplete parental understanding of the separation and lifestyle demands of seafaring, and minimal institutional engagement of families in career guidance processes. The findings extend cultural capital theory and family career development theory into Indonesian maritime vocational education and support family-facing orientation programming as an underexplored intervention point in sea transportation human resource pipeline development.
