Abstract

Sorake Beach in South Nias Regency is one of Indonesia’s leading surfing destinations, characterized by waves with high economic and recreational value. The intensification of sport tourism activities, particularly surfing and competition events, has the potential to increase pressure on coastal ecosystems and create challenges in environmental management and local community involvement. This study aims to analyze the interrelationships among ecological, sport tourism, and socio-cultural aspects as a basis for developing sustainable surfing tourism management at Sorake Beach. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The informants consisted of 15 participants, including destination managers and stakeholders, tourism businesses and surfing communities, local residents, and tourists. Data were analyzed thematically through data reduction, thematic categorization, interpretation, and conclusion drawing, with source and method triangulation employed to enhance the credibility of the findings. The results indicate that the sustainability of surfing tourism at Sorake Beach is influenced by the interrelationship between coastal ecological conditions, the intensity of surfing activities, destination management capacity, and local community participation. These findings provided the basis for developing the Sorake Ecology–Sport tourism (ESTS) model, which integrates environmental management, sport tourism development, community empowerment, and collaborative governance. The model emphasizes the importance of controlling the utilization of coastal areas, strengthening environmental management, improving surfing safety, and involving local communities in destination management. This study provides a conceptual contribution to the development of surfing tourism governance oriented toward balancing economic benefits, coastal ecosystem conservation, and the socio-cultural sustainability of local communities.
